PHITSANULOK: About 30 people were injured, most of them students, when a school van was rear-ended by a songthaew whose driver later explained he had a sudden attack of dizziness.

The crash occurred at an intersectrion in Muang district on Tuesday morning, Pol Lt Thanawat Kannilul, of Muang police station, said.

A sedan stopped in front of the van was also slightly damaged.

The students were on their way to school when the accident occurred. Most were in the van that regularly  takes them to local schools. Others were in the songthaew, commuting with other passengers to Phitsanulok's Muang district.

All injuries were described as minor.

Amnuay Cheenlakroi,  the 70-year-old driver of the songthaew, told police he had a sudden dizzy spell and lost control of the vehicle. He had received a diabetes shot that morning but did not have breakfast before driving.

A regular passenger in his songthaew said Mr Amnuay normally drove slowly, but drove faster on Tuesday.

The songthaew driver was being questioned.
