DIY SOS Bristol - what Nick Knowles really needs before filming starts in Southmead

The clock is ticking down to the arrival of Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS crew who are filming an episode of the long-running BBC show in Bristol next week.

Big Build programme makers have praised people from in and around the city for their support so far - but more help is still needed to help transform the rundown Southmead Adventure Playground.

And the BBC have shared more information with Bristol Live ahead of building work and filming starts at the Doncaster Road site on Tuesday (October 19).

Series producer Hamish Summers said: "We have had amazing support from the Bristol Community re volunteers and donating companies, but it’s a BIG BUILD, we still need more landscapers, carpenters, enormous volume of timber for the adventure playground, a new pool table for the community centre.

"This DIY SOS Bristol build episode which will broadcast to over four million viewers on BBC One primetime and help hundreds of local kids in the Bristol area."

The programme makers said the community around the playground is full of great characters and people of all ages, but the playground is in urgent need of renovation.

Viewers will see roped-off areas, kids playing on outdated equipment and meals being cooked in a kitchen that is not fit for purpose.

What will the Big Build do?

  • The dilapidated adventure playground will be repaired and new features added
  • The burned out 'forest school' will be transformed with an overgrown pond being cleared for 'pond dipping'
  • An 'old and tired' youth centre will get a new kitchen and a recording studio in a converted 40-foot container
  • The badly-damaged basketball and football pitch will be renovated

Filming will take place from Tuesday, October 19 and the keys to the new facility will be handed over on Thursday, October 28.

The Southmead Adventure Playground, known as The Ranch, has been loved and well-used by the community for many years, but as well as falling into disrepair, it has also suffered vandalism.
