DIY homeowner transforms kitchen into 'sanctuary' for just £30

A DIY homeowner who was desperate to change up her kitchen showed off an incredible transformation for just £30.

Renovating on a budget can sometimes mean you have to pick one or two things to focus on.

Heidi Vanacore, a primary school teacher from Middlesbrough, decided to splash out on a coat of paint for her kitchen cupboard doors and island, and created an impressive transformation.

The 30-year-old said she loved the idea of having green cabinets but didn't see the point in buying brand new ones.

By adding a coat of paint to the kitchen cupboard doors and her kitchen island she was able to pull off what looks like a very expensive renovation on the cheap.

Heidi said that her kitchen looked worn out from sun damage before the project (latestdeals.co.uk)

She told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk, who said that the project resulted in a 'green sanctuary this: "Some of my kitchen cupboards were discoloured- I’m assuming from sunlight over time - so I wanted to change them, so they were all the same colour.

"I had previously used Frenchic paint to up-cycle an old kitchen table and that worked well."

Frenchic paint comes in a variety of colours and finished and they have ranges that are perfect for interior surfaces like ceramic tiles, PVC window frames and on this occasion kitchen cupboards.

Heidi said her previous upcycling success inspired her to do the same with her kitchen and all she has to do next was keep the cost of supplies to a minimum.

She bought the paint from a nearby store- 50ml and 250ml tins of the paint, which cost her £29.90 in total.

An electric sander was borrowed from her Dad to help with the large areas and for the more intricate parts, she used sandpaper bought from B&M.

Heidi already had a Frenchic brush but she had some rollers from B&M- £7 for a set.

The overall process was relatively simple, she said: "First I painted my kitchen walls pure white as they were previously off white and they needed a refresh. The following week I painted my cabinets. I did this by removing a few cabinet doors from their hinges and taking off the handles.

"I cleaned the doors using sugar soap and then sanded them down until they had more of a matte look - as they were previously high shine gloss. I then applied 4 layers of paint to everything. Between each coat, I waited 2 hours before applying the next one."
