Dixons, Carphone Warehouse and PC World to be renamed after decades in huge shake up

The Dixons electrical name is being binned altogether after more than 80 years, along with all other brands under its parent company.

Owner Dixons Carphone said it was bringing all its brands under the name Currys instead.

The other names that will disappear are Currys PC World, Carphone Warehouse and Team Knowhow.

The company will also change its corporate name to Currys Plc under the shake-up in October.

Boss Alex Baldock said picking the Currys name was a “no brainer”.

He added: “Since Henry Curry first started helping everyone enjoy the amazing technology of his day - the bicycle - in 1884, Currys has been the best-known and most trusted brand in tech.

“Currys will have a bold and up-to-date look and feel, but this is a gearshift not a facelift.”

The Dixon name has not been on the high street since 2006, when the firm announced all of its shops in Britain would be rebranded as Currys.digital.

The Dixons.co.uk website was phased out in 2012 and replaced by Curry and PC World.

The Dixons name lived on with Dixons Travel stores at airports.

However, the firm announced plans last month to close all its airport shops, just months after a scheme allowing VAT-free shopping for overseas tourists was scrapped.

The name was also used until now in the group’s corporate name, after the merger of Dixons and Carphone Warehouse in 2014.

The first Dixons was in 1937, when Charles Kalms opened his first photo studio using the name in Southend, Essex.

The business did well during the Second World War, with demand from families for portraits.

It initially struggled after the war, but went on to grow and, in 1962, listed on the London Stock Exchange.

In 1984, Dixons Retail bought the Currys Group.

The changes announced today include rebranding more than 300 stores, 13,000 colleague uniforms and over 300 vehicle liveries.

Mr Baldock refused to reveal how much the rebranding would cost.

However, it is part of £190million of investment in the company this year as part of a wider overhaul.

That includes ramping-up Shop Live, where online visitors can get face-to-face advice via video from staff - including those in stores - on purchases.

Mr Baldock said: ”Things like this are another string to the bow of stores.”

It also launching Repair Live, offering virtual tips on getting equipment back up-and-running.
