Dixons Carphone is closing 134 stores as part of plans to transform its property portfolio.
The new concept stores had been planned since the merger of Dixons and Carphone Warehouse in 2014.
The company is integrating PC World, Currys and Carphone Warehouse stores. That means 134 stores will close, though it is not yet clear where these stores are located.
“We have been doing this - on a smaller scale - for some years and are very confident that the impact on sales and colleague numbers will be neutral or better. In addition, our experience shows that that colleagues prefer working in - and customers prefer shopping in - our new 3-in-1 format stores,” Seb James, group chief executive, said in a statement.
It will cost £50 million to refit the stores, the company said.
Dixons Carphone said it had its best ever trading day on Black Friday. James took to Twitter to reveal the sales curve in what he called a “Black Friday world”.
“Note the two humped camel shape,” he said.
James told the Independent last year that Dixons Carphone was benefitting in sales from the improved housing market.
“People are refurbishing their houses. There’s still a bit of tension left over from the recession, but for us when the housing market is better we tend to benefit,” James said.
Profits before tax for the 10 weeks to January 9 are expected to come in ahead of analysts predictions, in the range of £440 million and £450 million.
