Dixie O'Day and the Haunted House by Shirley Hughes & Clara Vulliamy - review

This very imaginative story is about Dixie and Percy going camping. I expected that they would go to a camping site full of caravans. But no, no, no, they rush past the camping site where the friendly family is camping (this friendly family are some people Percy and Dixie meet in another book of the Dixie O’Day series).

Instead Dixie and Percy stop outside a creepy house where somebody last lived 50 years ago! There are cows in the fields, an angry farmer, bats, ghosts and other scary things which lurk around the house.

Do Dixie and Percy find out that camping is better at a camp site? Or will they prefer a barbecue in the garden next time?

I liked the fabulous illustrations because they reflected the mood of the story and what the characters felt. They are on every page of the book.

Shirley Hughs

I would thoroughly recommend this book particularly at Halloween to have a good fright!
