Diwali 2019: When is Diwali? How and when Festival of Lights is celebrated

It's almost time for Diwali.

The Festival of Lights sees the Hindu, Jaims, Sikh and some Buddhist communities celebrate new beginnings and good (or light) triumphing over evil (or darkness).

It takes place 20 days after the Hindu festival of Navrati and is seen by many of the religions' worshippers as a way to honour Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, with hope for a prosperous year ahead.

The lead-up to the festival is often marked by the renovations and cleaning of homes and work spaces to prepare for the festivities that mark the festival itself.

But when exactly does Diwali fall?

Here's what you need to know about the Festival of Lights.

When is Diwali 2019?

Divali 2019 falls on Sunday, October 27, 2019.

The festival lasts for around five days, with day three (Sunday) being seen as the most significant of the festival.

The date of the festival is usually in October or November but is dependent on the calendar known as Tithi, which depends on lunar patterns.

How is Diwali celebrated?

The Festival of Lights is celebrated in a number of exciting and colourful ways.

There are usually street parties and festival events, with a focus on special delicacies and snacks for the occasion.

An important component, however, is the lighting of traditional earthen diyas (candles) for the celebration - it is the Festival of Lights after all!

Due to the focus on colours and lights, also expect there to be fireworks as those celebrating put on the biggest show to celebrate good triumphing over evil.
