Divorced woman found to be keeping 130 ginger cats in tiny city centre flat

A woman who gave a home to one stray pregnant cat four years ago now lives with 130 felines all thought to be related to her pet.

Other tenants living in the block of flats became suspicious after a strong smell began to fill the communal corridor.

Animal welfare organisation Zoo Defenders were called and volunteers went to investigate the problem at the home in Moscow, Russia.

They were shocked to find 130 cats roaming around when they entered the flat owned by the unnamed divorcee, and said animals were in the 'corridor, kitchen and bedroom'.

The group believed there were too many cats in the small space to 'exist comfortably'.

Irina Medvedeva, a volunteer with Zoo Defenders who found the cats, said the animals were in 'terrible condition' but very loving.

"We found about 130 half-starved but very affectionate cats," she said.

"The animals were in terrible condition, despite the fact that they had a corridor, a kitchen, and a bedroom, there were still too many of them to exist comfortably."

Another carer, Anastasia Soloviyeva, explained that the welfare charity found new homes for 50 of the cats after asking for help on social media but they estimate that there are '80 more' still living in the home.

It's believed the cats are related to the stray she initially adopted and a fund has been set up in a bid to re-home the cats after an appeal was put out by a charity.

In other animal news, a shy cheetah who suffers with anxiety has been given her own emotional support dog to help her feel more confident.

Nandi, who lives at Turtle Back Zoo in New Jersey, has been best pals with Bowie the Labrador Retriever since the pair were introduced when they were just a few weeks old.

In a strategy used in other zoos, the big cat was provided with a doggo friend to keep her company at scary events like educational presentations, with Nandi looking to Bowie for reassurance that 'everything is alright and she is safe'.
