Following predictions that it would be voted in with an extremely comfortable majority, the divorce referendum has passed.

The results were announced at 4.40am this morning at Dublin Castle following hours of counting.

The vote passed by 1,384,192 yes votes (82.1%) to 302,319 no votes (17.9%).

Couples will no longer need to live apart for four years before they can get divorced, with the length of time now being reduced to two years.

Counting continues in the Dublin local elections this morning in the RDS and Citywest centres, .

The counting in the European Parliament elections will also begin today, although a result is not expected until 10pm this evening to tie in with the rules in Europe.

Exit polls have predicted that Ciaran Cuffe is expected to top the poll in the capital and comfortably take a seat in Europe.
