Divock Origi to be offered new Liverpool deal after writing name into Anfield folklore

Divock Origi has won the chance of a Liverpool future after his goalscoring exploits of the past week.

Boss Jurgen Klopp wants to reward the Belgian’s goalscoring form of recent weeks with contract talks in the summer, and the prospect of a long term Anfield stay.

The striker was the Reds’ Champions League hero when he scored twice as a brilliant stand in for Roberto Firmino, to help defeat Barcelona.

And he was also a match-winner last weekend when he scored a late winner at Newcastle to keep his side’s Premier League hopes alive.

It is the sort of form which has proved to Klopp the forward has returned to the level of 2016 when he became a regular in the Liverpool side, before injury blighted his Merseyside career.

Origi is still only 24, and he took the gamble of refusing a move in January - despite an offer from Wolves to give him a fresh start with his Liverpool chances so limited.

That has paid off. He has scored 6 goals in the campaign - including a last minute derby winner at Everton - and become a hero to the fans with his ability to deliver such important goals.

Daniel Sturridge is certain to leave Anfield this summer, and Klopp sees Origi’s versatility in being able to play across the front line, combined with a renewed fitness and scoring threat, as a valuable option.

The forward has a year left on his current deal, and he will be offered a heavily-incentivised extension, encouraging him to kick on and grasp a more regular starting spot.
