Divock Origi signs new Liverpool contract: Long-term deal for Champions League hero

Divock Origi has ended speculation over his future by signing a new long-term contract with Liverpool.

The Belgian had been attracting interest from across Europe after entering the final year of his deal with the Reds, particularly in light of his recent European heroics, but has chosen to stay at Anfield.

Origi looked certain to leave the Merseyside club at the turn of the year as he struggled to dislodge Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane or Mohamed Salah from the starting XI.

However, a late-season turnaround that culminated in two Champions League semi-final goals against Barcelona and a vital late strike in the final against Tottenham led to the offer of a new deal.

Jurgen Klopp had resolved not to allow Origi to leave this summer regardless of whether he penned fresh terms or not, even if that meant taking the hit of a free transfer in 12 months time.

But the 24-year-old has elected to remain at Anfield to help Liverpool try and build on their first major trophy since 2012.

As is customary for contracts negotiated by the Reds' sporting director Michael Edwards, no release clause has been included - a fact that the club's hierarchy believes underlines Origi's commitment.

The former Lille forward is expected to pick up his first minutes of pre-season on Thursday when Klopp and co visit Tranmere Rovers for a friendly fixture.
