Divisive Festival Darling Sacrifice Starring Chris Evans Finds Streaming Home

Sacrifice, the star-studded satire that left critics at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival divided, is landing on Netflix. The streaming giant just secured U.S. rights to the film, which stars Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy in a story that skewers celebrity activism and doomsday hysteria.

After months of radio silence following its chilly festival reception, the movie is getting a second shot, this time, in front of a home audience that might be more forgiving than the press. Netflix isn’t letting the film’s underwhelming 37% Rotten Tomatoes score deter it. The deal was struck at the Cannes Market, a move that suggests the streamer is betting big on the film’s A-list cast to carry it.

According to Movieweb, Evans, fresh off his Captain America tenure, is still testing the waters of post-superhero roles, while Taylor-Joy has been on a steady rise since The Queen’s Gambit. Throw in Vincent Cassel, Salma Hayek Pinault, John Malkovich, and even Charli XCX and Swedish rapper Yung Lean in his film debut, and you’ve got a lineup that’s hard to ignore, even if the reviews didn’t quite deliver.

The film’s premise is equal parts absurd and ambitious

Evans plays Mike Tyler, a washed-up movie star grappling with an existential crisis who finds himself at a lavish environmental gala on a Greek island. The event is hosted by Cassel’s billionaire and Hayek Pinault’s glamorous wife, but things take a dark turn when Taylor-Joy’s Joan, a fanatical zealot convinced she’s hearing a volcanic prophecy, storms in with her militia.

Joan takes three hostages – Mike, the billionaire, and an unlucky bystander – and forces them on a chaotic journey through fire and forest. The question at the heart of it all: What would you sacrifice for humanity?

It’s a sharp, if messy, satire of performative activism and the cult of celebrity, written by Romain Gavras and Will Arbery, the playwright behind Heroes of the Fourth Turning and a writer for Succession. The pedigree suggests a razor-sharp script, but reviews out of TIFF painted a different picture.

Critics praised the film’s visual flair – Gavras’ music video background shines in the set pieces, and the Greek volcanic locations give it a grandeur most satires lack – but many questioned whether the substance matched the style. That Netflix is moving forward with Sacrifice despite the lukewarm reception speaks to the power of its cast.

Netflix has history with Gavras

The streaming giant backed his 2022 action-drama Athena at Venice, and it’s clearly willing to take risks on bold, divisive projects. The plan is to give the film a limited theatrical run or screening period for international buyers before it hits Netflix in the U.S., likely sometime in late summer or fall. Dates are still up in the air, but the international rollout is already in motion, with deals secured across the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada, and beyond, per Deadline.

The film’s international distribution is a who’s who of indie powerhouses. Black Bear is handling the UK, DCM has Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and Eagle is taking Italy. Other territories include Spain (YouPlanet), Canada (Elevation), Latin America (Sun), and Scandinavia (Mis Label). It’s a wide-reaching release for a film that struggled to find a U.S. buyer in the months after TIFF, proving that star power and other factors still carry weight, even when the reviews don’t.

For fans of Evans and Taylor-Joy, Sacrifice offers a chance to see them in roles that push beyond their usual fare. Evans, in particular, seems eager to shed the Captain America persona, though a return for the much-anticipated Avengers: Doomsday might complicate that. Taylor-Joy, meanwhile, continues to pick projects that showcase her range, from period dramas to dark, offbeat thrillers.

The film’s production is a global affair

Iconoclast leads the charge alongside Mid March Media, Film4, and even Gucci as an associate producer. The Onassis Culture and Athens Festival are also involved, giving the project a cultural weight that matches its visual ambition.

So, will Sacrifice win over streaming audiences after failing to impress critics? It’s anyone’s guess. Netflix isn’t known for playing it safe. The streamer has a history of reviving films that festival crowds didn’t embrace, and Sacrifice might just be the next in line. If you’re a fan of dark comedies, star-studded casts, or films that don’t shy away from big, messy ideas, this could be your next binge.
