American movies are full of white men, data shows

The Oscars has become a lightning rod for discussions about diversity in Hollywood.

Last year, Moonlight was the first film with an all-black cast to win Best Picture. This year, Frances McDormand introduced the broader public to the phrase "inclusion rider".

Still, there has been little change over the past decade when it comes to what kinds of people appear onscreen, according to the latest annual report from the University of Southern California Annenberg.

"In terms of women and people of colour, Hollywood movies continue to present viewers with a status quo that skews from reality," the report says.

"Given the industry attention to inclusion, it is difficult to understand why the numbers remain resistant to change."
