Drivers beware as road re-surfacing work set to start in Howdon next week

Road re-surfacing in Howdon is set to start next week and is expected to be finished in early September.

Work to resurface the northern section of Churchill Street in Howdon, from number 242 to the Willington Square interchange (including the roundabout), is due to get underway from Wednesday, August 28.

The southern end of Churchill Street, towards the junction with A193 Tynemouth Road, was repaired last year. It is part of North Tyneside Council’s annual roads resurfacing and maintenance programme, which includes repairing 78 roads this year.

Coun Carl Johnson, cabinet member for Environment and Transport, said: “We know the condition of roads and pavements is really important to residents.

“Over the last three years we’ve invested more than £13million in the borough’s highways network, including £5.5million this year.

“I’m sure people who use Churchill Street will welcome the completion of repairs to this well-used route.”

At 900 metres long, Churchill Street was the largest area to feature in the council’s resurfacing programme last year.

The next stage of work, which will be managed by the authority’s partner Capita, is expected to be complete by Friday, September 6.

Work will be carried out during evenings to minimise congestion and one lane will be closed in the area with temporary traffic lights in operation.

Diversions will be in place when the A1058 Coast Road slip roads are closed and bus services will continue to run subject to minor diversions.
