Motorists will face diversions as a busy road near Newcastle city centre is set to close for gas works.
Northern Gas Networks (NGN) has announced it will temporarily close the B6323 Ponteland Road at Heddon-on-the-Wall near Newcastle to fix a gas escape.
The North of England’s gas distributor, confirmed the repairs are to a medium pressure gas main located under the highway. To enable the works, two-way temporary traffic lights could be installed.

In order keep engineers and members of the public safe, the repair work will now require a full road closure. A diversion will be put in place and motorists are advised to leave extra time for travel.
Michael Pratt, Business Operations manager at Northern Gas Networks, said: “We have tried our best to undertake the repair without a road closure but unfortunately that option is no longer possible.
“We’re sorry for any inconvenience customers may experience as a result, however this is essential repair work and the safety of our customers and engineers is our number one priority.
“Our teams are working flat out to complete the repair as safely and as quickly as possible.”
