Diversion as three-vehicle M5 crash closes motorway until Monday

Diversions are in place following the three-vehicle crash on the M5 in Gloucestershire in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The motorway remains closed in both directions, and the road is expected to remain closed until Monday morning.

At around 5.20am, a Ford Fiesta left the carriageway of the M5. A lorry then parked to attempt to protect the car.

However, a second lorry then collided with the initial lorry. Both were destroyed in the accident.

Live updates of the incident can be followed in our live blog.

The motorway has now been closed since around 6.10am.

Highways England have said roadworks will be needed to repair the carriageway and the M5 between Junction 9 for Tewkesbury and Junction 11 for the Golden Valley bypass remain closed.

Highways England are hoping to open on lane of the southbound carriageway shortly, but the northbound carriageway will remain closed until Monday.
