PHUKET: A cannon, believed to date back to the early Rattanakosin era about 200 years ago, has been discovered in the sea off Koh Racha Noi in the resort province.
A team of divers found the cannon on the seabed during a dive expedition. Also found nearby was a square object of what looks to be the base of the cannon.
Phuket deputy governor Thanyawat Charnpinit said experts believed the cannon had once been mounted on a warship.
It looks similar to a cannon unearthed in the compound of the provincial court in Ranong in 1983.
It was determined the Ranong cannon, now displayed in front of the provincial court building, was produced in the early Rattanakosin period.
The newly discovered cannon will be recovered and taken to a museum.
