Diver mauled to death by great white shark while partner watched in horror

A woman was hospitalised for shock after watching a shark maul her partner to death.

The body of Gary Johnson has not yet been found after he was attacked at about 1.30pm off Cull Island in Esperance, south-east of Perth on Sunday.

It is thought that a great white shark was responsible for the attack.

As emergency crews continue to search for Mr Johnson's body his wife Karen Milligan is being treated in hospital for shock.

She was in a boat four metres away during the attack and frantically called for help over the radio.

Glen Quinlivan was setting up his powerboat for a day trip when he heard Ms Milligan's cries for help.

"We tried to find him. We tried to help her but to no avail," he told  The West .

"I really feel for her, she's obviously witnessed something you don't want to see."

Mr Quinlivan said that no signs of Mr Johnson had been found except for his flippers and part of his wetsuit.

The last time somebody was killed by a shark in the region was back in 2017.

Laeticia Brouwer, 17, was attacked in Wylie Bay while on an Easter weekend holiday with her family.

Following the shark attack swimmers have been advised to stay clear of the area and follow local beach closures.
