Disused toilets beside Glasgow Cathedral to be turned into short-term holiday let

A disused public toilet is set to be turned into short-term holiday accommodation.

Plans to turn the disused toilets on Cathedral Square into self-catering tourist accommodation have been given the go-ahead by the council.

A 25-year lease has been agreed on the building which sits beside Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis.

It'll be turned into a 'highly individual' two bedroom property.

The developer is hoping to create a city-wide network of unusual lettable spaces with a focus on old retail units, public conveniences, disused electrical substations and redundant transport infrastructure.

By using these kinds of spaces, the city will be able to offer tourists a more 'immersive' experience than staying in a hotel or guest house but not impinge on the city's housing stock.

An application for the development explains: "We feel that re-energising existing built heritage, unsuitable for permanent housing, that has been overlooked, presents multiple benefits; from regenerating disused buildings, offering low-priced buildings to convert/reuse and creating unusual and characterful places to stay — something emerging tourism markets are demanding.

“In relation to the Cathedral Square site, we are envisaging that the converted building will appeal to a wide range of travellers. From business travellers attending conferences and events related to the adjacent hospital and universities to tourist visitors seeking larger self-catering accommodation very close to the city centre and all of its attractions as well as tourists using this as a base to visit a wider area around Glasgow.

“We would envisage a minimum of two nights booking and a maximum of ten days.”

Planning permission was previously granted for a 25-seat licensed restaurant and café and a 25-seat outdoor terrace at the site.
