'Disturbing' moment swan swims past island of rubbish in Scots park captured on camera

A Scots dad has captured the 'disturbing' moment a swan majestically swims past and island of rubbish in a Scots park.

Concerned Chris Blair took the shock snaps of the creature as it swam in the waterways past dozens of plastic bottles in Strathclyde Country Park on the outskirts of Motherwell.

Chris is taking on a charity challenge with his two daughters Ruby 9 years old and Anna who is 2 for mental health and suicide prevention cause Chris's House- walking 100 miles around the Lanarkshire town to raise cash.

But when on his rounds on Sunday morning he captured the 'disturbing image' which seemed to show the human impact on nature.

Chris told the Record: "Would be good to get awareness about the litter situation I'm my area, I'm spending Alot of time walking for a local charity called chris's house its a suicide awareness charity.

"Iam walking 100 miles this February for chris's house and I was behind on my miles last week and playing catch up so I decided to do my local park and go around twice, this was at the Roman Bridge site at the park when I noticed the beautiful swan in amongst a junk yard to say the least. I found this a disturbing image of such a beautiful creature living in this. T

"Definitely I would say (it has got worse over lockdown) but I'm doing my rounds with the miles for the charity and spending lots of time in the local woods and parks.

"The bins everywhere are overflowing but locals have to take responsibility as well as councils in this troubling situation we are all in."

A North Lanarkshire council spokeswoman said: "“This litter has collected at a boom which is in place to stop debris washed down the South Calder River entering Strathclyde Loch.

"It is regularly cleared and the current build up will be removed as soon as possible. Heavy rain, which we have experienced recently, often washes more litter downstream. We would ask people to dispose of their litter responsibly to help keep our communities clean.”

Chris shared his pictures on social media and was met by shocked reactions from locals.

One wrote: "It's terrible humans can't use bins."

David Attenbourgh helped shine a light on plastic pollution in the world's oceans and waterways.
