Distressing Malpractice ending has viewers issue demand to ITV

ITV's Leeds hospital drama Malpractice ended tonight and viewers are already making demands to ITV and actress Niamh Algar.

The fifth and final episode of the series saw lead character Lucinda Edwards take to our screens one more time. The drama was filmed in and near Leeds and is based at a fictional Leeds NHS hospital.

Although it's not based on a true story, Niamh has spoken previously how real doctors were consulted on the drama, to try to lend the proceedings a touch of the authentic, even though the characters and plot is made up.

Tonight, viewers saw a gripping finale (WARNING - Spoilers ahead!) which saw Dr Edwards almost die of a drug overdose as her battle with addiction following an investigation into her practice on the ward pushed her to the very edge.

Viewers were gripped as they rooted for her character to make it, especially when she was rushed for treatment into the very ward she works at.

Before the finale went out, lead actress Niamh Algar put out a message based on the 'distressing' storyline of the series.

She said: "Episode 5 of Malpractice airs tonight on ITV. It has been a privilege to play this role & work alongside such an amazing cast & crew; and also be in the position to hear many real-life stories about medical professionals who have found themselves in similar stressful positions.

"Please do not struggle in silence, the following resources are available to help" before listing several websites including Doctors-in-distress.org.uk and talktofrank.com.

Viewers loved the drama, calling it "utterly unbelievable" and Niam's performance 'phenomenal'.

Now fans are calling for a second series of Malpractice as soon as possible.

@CSrizolli23 said: "Omg so we wont know what happens at the tribunal, by the way its left it, hopefully there will be a 2nd series when Lucinda collapsed after the drugs i was shouting at the screen please don't die this series @NiamhAlgar has been totally phenomenal xx #malpractice"

@dorina355 said: "Absolutely the right ending to an utterly believable drama #Malpractice based around the A&E section of a hospital. Great acting and depressingly plausible script from the writers"

@arnold__simon said: "#malpractice A gripping and horrific drama. Hopefully, a second series?"

@aylesburyfreak said: "#Malpractice must be the most powerful & thought provoking drama I have seen in a long while!"

@jacquicotter said: "Very good. #malpractice Addiction definitely being treated more sensitively in recent years. Doctors do get addicted to drugs too which is an advert for the power of the addiction monster. Giving up cigs 20yrs ago was one of hardest things Ive ever done. Addiction is a b*****."
