'Distressed' man talked down by police from restaurant roof 'receiving appropriate support'

A 'distressed' man was talked down by police from the roof of a building.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to Water Street in Wigan town centre at around 5.10pm.

The man is understood to have climbed onto the roof of a Chinese restaurant.

A cordon was put in place as the emergency dealt with the incident.

Police said officers spoke to the man, who later climbed down to safety.

There were no reported injuries.

Police said the man, who hasn't been identified, was 'receiving appropriate support' after being checked by paramedics at the scene.

No age for him has been released.

The incident is understood to have lasted around 40 minutes.

In a Facebook post, GMP Wigan West said the man was now safe.

Police said: "At approximately 5.10pm this evening, Tuesday June 22, we were called to reports of a distressed man on the roof of a building on Water Street, Wigan.

"Our officers attended along with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service.

"A cordon was put in place whilst we spoke to the man and we're pleased to report that he is now safely off the roof and receiving appropriate support.

"Thank you for everyone's patience and support whilst we dealt with the incident."
