'Distressed and sick' fin whale spotted in River Liffey found dead at Dublin Port

A whale which was spotted swimming around River Liffey on Wednesday has been found dead at Dublin Port.

The oceanic fin whale was spotted by a Dublin Port worker this morning at around 10am.

Spokeswoman for Dublin Port Edel Currie told Dublin Live that the whale was most likely "sick and distressed" and this is the reason why it found its way to shore.

She said: "We are still trying to gather information ourselves. We have contacted the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group for more information but at the moment there's not a whole lot.

"It was one of our own workers who spotted it.

"We were told that the whale was sick and distressed and that's why it came into the port in the first place. It's such sad news."

Edel added that she didn't think the recent weather events correlated with the condition of the whale and its reasons for coming into Dublin Port.

It is believed that the whale's remains will stay in the sea and will not be removed as Dublin Port continue to assess the situation.
