Distraught Spanish swimmer given second chance to qualify

RIO DE JANEIRO _ The crowd kept cheering even as Spain's Miguel Duran Navia was collecting his things, thinking he had just lost his chance at the Olympics after what appeared to be a false start when he jumped into the pool early.

Duran Navia exited the deck, hiding his head in his hands as the crowd kept roaring in support. Duran Navia wouldn't be under the bleachers for long, however.

Rules officials granted him a second chance to qualify for the finals in the 400-freestyle after deeming his false start was not his mistake.

He would go on to finish eighth in his heat and miss making the finals by a wide margin, but it provided one of the first uplifting moments of the Olympics when Duran Navia got a second chance to qualify for a medal.

The crowd kept cheering almost until Duran Navia finally jumped in the pool _ with a true start.
