The Department of Land Transport plans to introduce redesigned blue licence plates for electric vehicles, with safety issues being the major reason.
The department said it planned blue licence plates for EVs to clearly distinguish them from oil-fueled vehicles. It is sounding out public opinion on the idea from May 31 to June 30.
The project is aimed at helping emergency response teams readily identify EVs involved in accidents, and act appropriately, and in the provision of incentives for owners of electric vehicles.
The dimensions of the new plates and the format of the numbers and letters on them will remain the same, but EV plates will have a reflective blue background.
The new plates will be issued initially for electric cars, pickups and private three-wheeled vehicles, and private electric motorcycles.
Design-work continues for new licence plates for electric taxis, charter vehicles and taxi motorcycles, the announcement said.
