Distillery cuts working week to four days to boost staff mental health

An island distillery has introduced a four-day working week for staff in a bid to boost mental health, allowing them more time to carry out chores and other interests.

Owners of The Isle of Barra Distillers in the Outer Hebrides have decided to implement the scheme this month to show workers they are "appreciated and cared for".

They said the change was a 2022 business goal and will give staff more time to spend with loved ones or complete the necessary household chores without losing pay.

It comes after employees agreed they would prefer to work longer hours over fewer days, which is anticipated to help cut the cost of childcare and commuting.

Bosses said they hope the distillery would reap the benefits of the change as employees' wellbeing is boosted and they come to work "refreshed and energised".

The distillery's founders, Michael and Katie Morrison, said: "We have taken some time to think about the pros and cons and had discussions with employees to make sure this change will benefit everyone.

"Our employees agreed they would prefer working slightly longer hours in order to work fewer days.

"The four-day working week would provide employees with more free time outside of work, with no loss in pay.

“They are all looking forward to the change to their working week as there are several advantages such as cutting down on childcare costs, less commuting to work and simply having more time to spend with loved ones.

"We are flexible so if at any point our team’s circumstances change, we of course look to make the hours work as best we can."
