Disruption expected to continue after Lewes train derailment

  • Two people were seriously injured and 18 others hurt when a Southern Railway train derailed between Haywards Heath and Lewes in Sussex .
  • Emergency services declared a “major incident” after three train carriages derailed onto their side at 3.54pm on Thursday, trapping several people.
  • They have been safely evacuated, according to British Transport Police , and 20 people were taken to hospital, including two suffering severe injuries “conveyed to a major trauma centre”, Michael Bradfield, the Deputy Chief Paramedic Officer at the South East Coast Ambulance Service, said.
  • The railway line between Lewes and Haywards Heath remains closed until further notice, and disruption is expected on Friday.
  • The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has launched an investigation to establish the cause of the derailment.
