'Disrespectful low-life delinquents': Gallipoli Club 'livid' after HQ vandalised

Officials at the Gallipoli Legion Club in Newcastle are furious after their headquarters was targeted by vandals in the lead-up to Anzac Day.

Video surveillance footage at the club, in the suburb of Hamilton, shows three people graffitiing the outside of the building and the foyer.

Club CEO Michael Cleary said members were outraged and that the graffiti had tarnished the legacy of war veterans.

"Emotions are running high. In particular, this close to Anzac Day — members here are livid," he said.

"As well as the memory of our foundation members, who were the men of Anzac, and also the Rats of Tobruk.

"We try hard to carry on their legacy, their memory, so to have this happen to their legend, it's very sad."

In a Facebook post, the club said "disrespectful low-life delinquents" were responsible for the vandalism.

Mr Cleary said the crime was disrespectful, but members have been overwhelmed by the support they have received.

"The amount of social media traction we've received with this, and all the shares, and the disgust from the people on social media," he said.

"This has reached even over to England, how disgusted they are that this memory has been tarnished by some youths."
