A Melbourne judge has condemned a killer's "disrespectful, contemptuous and misogynistic" views of women while sentencing the man over the 2015 death of mother-of-four Karen Rae.
Anthony John Smith, 51, was sentenced to 13 years in jail for the manslaughter of Ms Rae, whose body was found by the side of the Frankston Freeway in Melbourne's south-east in December 2016.
The court heard that in April 2015 he choked 48-year-old Ms Rae while they were having sex in his car, which caused her death.
"By unlawfully assaulting her and dangerously strangling or choking her without her consent until she was dead, you treated her as the impersonal object of your own male power and sexual pleasure during an otherwise mutual and consensual sexual activity," Justice Kevin Bell told Smith during a sentencing hearing in the Supreme Court.
"You as an individual and others … must be deterred from acting on disrespectful, contemptuous and misogynistic views and opinions about women.
"The crime you committed must be unequivocally denounced by the court, not just because it was an aggravated manslaughter but because it is directly associated with those views and opinions."
The court heard Smith had repeatedly denied involvement in Ms Rae's death.
"You secretly buried her body beside the Frankston Freeway and disposed of her things," Justice Bell said.
"You also treated Karen's body as a thing to be discarded and concealed.
"You gave numerous false accounts of your movements and blamed others for the crime."
Victim died in 'terrifying way'
The court heard Smith described Ms Rae as a "thing" and a "creature" to an undercover police officer and demonstrated a "Darth Vader" choking motion to the throat.
"I do not accept your counsel's submission that this is to be treated as bluff, bluster and trash talk," Justice Bell said.
"It dehumanises women."
The court heard Smith had treated other sexual partners in a similar way.
Even after he was arrested in December 2016 and had told police where to find Ms Rae's body, he continued to lie about his involvement, the court heard.
"It was 20 months of hell before Karen's body was found," Justice Bell told the court.
The court heard Ms Rae had a long history of drug addiction and had been estranged from her mother until just before she went missing.
"She suffered a sad, miserable and painful existence because of her addiction and the choices she made," Justice Bell said.
"It would have been a terrifying way for Karen to die."
Justice Bell noted that Ms Rae would have turned 52 last Monday.
Smith — who was born in the United Kingdom and does not have Australian citizenship — must serve a non-parole period of 10 years.
He faces possible deportation once his jail term is completed.
