Disqualified driver narrowly avoids prison after being caught speeding

A disqualified driver got behind the wheel in Coatbridge and was caught speeding.

John Roberts narrowly avoided prison after flaunting court rules in May.

The Glasgow resident was seen driving at 41pmh through Whifflet Street’s 30mph zone.

Roberts appeared to face the music during sentencing at Airdrie Sheriff Court last week.

His defence solicitor said: “He’s a proud and hard-working man.

“He’s a former manager at B&Q and M&S.

“There’s a letter here from his 98-year-old mother who is a very alert woman.

“He’s currently undergoing treatment for depression.”

Passing sentence, Sheriff Frank Pieri said: “I’ll impose a direct alternative to custody.

“This is a blatant breach of an order.

“You’ll be under supervision for one year and must carry out 125 hours of unpaid work in the next six months.

“You’ll also be disqualified from driving for two years.”
