Disqualified driver drove at speed on pavement to escape from police

A disqualified driver pulled onto a pavement and drove at speed to get away from police.

Paul Fear, 50, was described as having an "unenviable" list of previous convictions which included a range of motoring offences.

He was banned from driving but this did not prevent him from getting behind the wheel on more than one occasion.

On February 22, he was spotted by police driving in Ferndale, Rhondda, and they tried to pull him over but Fear turned onto the pavement and drove at speed past the police car which attempted to block him in, before pulling onto the pavement again as he approached a mini-roundabout.

The police were unable to detain him on that occasion but he was spotted driving again on April 21 in Caerau, near Maesteg, and arrested.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday heard Fear, of Brynbedw Road, Tylorstown, later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving while disqualified, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

In mitigation, defence barrister Andrew Taylor admitted his client's offence was a "stupid thing to do" and conceded his previous convictions were aggravating feature. He also told the court that both of the defendant's parents were in ill health, particularly his father.

Mr Taylor added: "There was no damage to anyone's property let alone physical damage to any individual. No member of the public was put to fear or danger."

Sentencing Recorder IWL said he was "sad to see" Fear committing offences of this level at his age.

He added: "The court has tried to help you over the years but you have continued committing offences and it's got to stop.

"I am sad to hear your parents are not well but the only person who has put you in (court) is you and it's yourself who has let your family down."

Fear was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and was disqualified from driving for five-and-a-half years.
