Dispersal orders to be used in Pontypridd to halt rise in anti-social behaviour

Police have been granted additional powers to tackle antisocial behaviour in Pontypridd town centre following a rise in anti-social behaviour.

On Tuesday evening, South Wales Police said Pontypridd town centre would be subject to a so-called dispersal order.

The order means an officer can now issue a person with a written order directing them to leave the area. Failure to do so would result in them being arrested.

Officers decided to take the move following an increase in anti-social behaviour (ASB) calls.

A Twitter post, published on Tuesday, read: "PC Noyce has already issued two females with a Section 35 Notice for Anti-Social Behaviour and confiscated their alcohol.

"Working closely with @RCTCouncil CCTV Control Room."

Ahead of the announcement, South Wales Police confirmed there had been a number of incidents in the town centre in relation to people drinking and breaching Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPO).

Officers said six people had alcohol confiscated and ASB referrals were submitted. A male was also arrested for "public order offences".

It comes after police said Pontypridd Neighbourhood Team issued a number of ASB referrals to people drinking in Pontypridd town centre just over a week ago.

On August 3, South Wales Police also published information on social media stating that three males had alcohol confiscated in the town centre after breaching the PSPO.
