Dispersal order put in place in Durham neighbourhood after antisocial behaviour and nuisance youths

A dispersal order has been put in place in a neighbourhood in County Durham after reports of antisocial behaviour and nuisance youths.

Police imposed a dispersal order in Shotton Colliery from 5pm on Friday, which will run for 48 hours.

The order means that if a person is given a direction to leave the area the person must not return to the area within a specified time.

A breach of this notice can lead to arrest and/or a fine of up £2,500 and/or up to three months in prison.

It comes as the Peterlee Neighbourhood Team launched a new initiative in an effort to reduce anti-social behaviour in hot spot locations throughout the town centre and surrounding villages.

After speaking to residents and businesses, the team said various parts of Shotton Colliery and Peterlee were areas highlighted in its rollout.

And to reiterate their message, they have marked pavements with the words: 'ASB Stamp it out'.

A spokesperson for Peterlee Police said: "Using a stencil and temporary chalk paint, PCSO Goodwin and PCSO Anderson have marked pavements in areas where we receive a high volume of calls in relation to anti-social behaviour.

"The stencilled image will stay in place for up to three weeks and highlight to members of the public, and to those causing the issues, that we are aware of what is going on and will be providing an increased presence in the area until the behaviour stops.

"We will continue to take positive action in respect of those individuals we locate in these areas who we believe are responsible for causing anti-social behaviour within our communities.

"Today the team have spent time speaking to local residents and staff from shops, discussing their concerns and explaining our new initiative. We have also put up posters in the locations to inform and educate others.

"Anti-social behaviour and youth nuisance remain our priority and we will continue to deal robustly with those responsible. We ask that members of our communities continue to report incidents of anti-social behaviour to us to help us Stamp It Out.

"Among the areas that have been highlighted today in our rollout are various parts of Shotton Colliery and Peterlee."
