Just when you thought that Disney had announced a live-action reboot for every animation in their back catalogue, the Hollywood Reporter has revealed that a sequence from 1940s musical portmanteau Fantasia will be joining the ranks.
The Night on Bald Mountain focuses on a creature who raises spirits from the dead, who go on to dance, fly and generally cause trouble. Sources suggest the live action take will be similar in tone and structure to Maleficent. The reimagining of the Sleeping Beauty legend starring Angelina Jolie made $758m (£495m) worldwide.
The new version of the sequence will be written and produced by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who also wrote last year’s Dracula Untold and the forthcoming Vin Diesel adventure The Last Witch Hunter.
The original section was accompanied by music from Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky. Fantasia was followed by a sequel called Fantasia 2000, which made no reference to Night on Bald Mountain.
News of a reboot follows the success of Cinderella, which has made $531m and joins a long list of forthcoming live action adaptations, including Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Mulan and The Jungle Book.
