Disney+ to stream latest Star Wars film The Rise of Skywalker two months early

Disney+ is set to deliver a lockdown gift for Star Wars fans by releasing The Rise of Skywalker to coincide with Star Wars Day.

The company announced on Monday that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final film of the new Skywalker trilogy, will arrive on the platform next Monday, May 4.

The Rise of Skywalker is directed by J.J. Abrams, who directed the first in the new trilogy, The Force Awakens.

The 2019 blockbuster, starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran and Carrie Fisher, concludes the saga that began all the way back in 1977 with George Lucas’s A New Hope.

Despite The Force Awakens and its sequel The Last Jedi receiving critical acclaim, The Rise of Skywalker premiered to mixed reviews and currently holds a 52 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition to releasing The Rise of Skywalker, Disney+ will also release a “commemorative gallery” with artwork from a range of films and television series from the franchise.

Though the Skywalker trilogy has concluded, a new trilogy of films will arrive this decade, while various television projects and spin-off films are in the works.
