Disney to release hit musical Hamilton in cinemas with original Broadway cast

Globally beloved musical Hamilton is soon to arrive in cinemas near you.

The original cast from the Broadway sensation created by Mary Poppins Returns star Lin-Manuel Miranda will star in the filmed version of the hit stage show that Disney is releasing next year.

Hamilton follows the life story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton with a mixture of musical genres such as soul, pop, and R & B.

The musical was also notable for its colour-conscious casting of non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other notable historical characters.

The version that will be shown in cinema theatres across the globe was filmed onstage at The Richard Rodgers Theatre, as confirmed by Disney.

The filmed show will be released in cinemas by Disney on October 15, 2021.

The original Broadway cast featured in the film include Lin-Manuel Miranda (Alexander Hamilton), Leslie Odom, Jr. ( Aaron Burr), Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelica Schuyler), Phillipa Soo (Eliza Hamilton), Jasmine Cephas Jones (Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds), Christopher Jackson (George Washington, Daveed Diggs (Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson), Okieriete Onaodowan (Hercules Mulligan/James Madison), Anthony Ramos (John Laurens/Philip Hamilton), and Frozen star Jonathan Groff(King George).

Hamilton first premiered in New York City on January 20, 2015 before heading to Broadway later that year.

It received a record-setting 16 nominations at the 2016 Tony Awards, going on to win 11 gongs, including Best Musical.

The show also won a 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama before it moved to the West End in London in December 2018, going on to win seven Olivier Awards in 2018, including Best New Musical.

The musical isn't the only of Miranda's to come to the big screen as his Broadway musical In The Heights has been adapted as a movie which is due to be released in June this year.

Meanwhile, Miranda himself - who wrote the music, lyrics and book for Hamilton - has been recently seen in Disney sequel Mary Poppins Returns and HBO/BBC fantasy series His Dark Materials.

Hamilton is released in cinemas on October 15, 2021.
