Disney to close Cardiff store next week

The Disney store in Cardiff is set to close its doors for the final time next week, it has been confirmed.

The store in St David's will be closed for good by next Tuesday as part of the retailer's plans to shift its focus to online shopping, the company has announced.

A sign in the window of the Cardiff store reads that the store "will close on or before September 14."

In March, the US-based retailer announced its plan to focus on "ecommerce" following the pandemic.

It is thought Disney will close all of their UK stores apart from the flagship Oxford Street shop, Leeds Live reports.

The news of the Cardiff store's closure follows news of Disney store closures elsewhere in the UK, in Sheffield, York and Leeds.

WalesOnline asked Disney for confirmation that the Cardiff store will be permanently closing next week, and the company confirmed that September 14 is the proposed final day of trading for the store.

“While consumer behaviour has shifted toward online shopping, the global pandemic has changed what consumers expect from a retailer,” said Stephanie Young, president of consumer products, games and publishing at Disney.

“Over the past few years, we’ve been focused on meeting consumers where they are already spending their time, such as the expansion of Disney store shop-in-shops around the world.

"We now plan to create a more flexible, interconnected ecommerce experience that gives consumers easy access to unique, high-quality products across all our franchises.”

A petition to save the UK Disney stores was started two months ago and has since reached more than 15,000 signatures.

In April, St David's revealed it had "exciting ideas" for the Debenhams space following the upcoming closure of the retail giant in May.

In January, the retail giant announced all of its stores across the UK would close and it would relaunch as an online-only operation.
