Disney’s heartwarming animated Christmas advertisement moves viewers to tears

Disney has released a sentimental Christmas advert in aid of the children’s charity Make-A-Wish.

The three-minute animation, released on Monday (9 November) features Mickey Mouse, and focuses on the relationship between a Filipino grandmother and her granddaughter.

Accompanying the video is an original track called “Love Is A Compass” by UK music artist Griff.

The song is currently available for sale, with proceeds from every download for the rest of 2020 being donated to Make-A-Wish.

The animation’s story begins in 1940, as the grandmother, then a child, receives a Mickey Mouse toy for Christmas.

Jumping forward to 2005, the advert then follows the grandmother and her young grandchild as they bond during the festive season. As the granddaughter grows, she loses connection with her elderly relative, but a look at the beloved Disney doll prompts a heartfelt reunion between the two.

The trailer was praised by many viewers for its focus on a Filipino family, with some using social media to express their delight.

“This made me cry, as a Filipino who works abroad I always miss the Christmas spirit in the Philippines,” wrote one commenter.

“Thank you Disney for this tribute to Filipino immigrant families!” wrote another. “Nothing beats the Christmas feels in the Philippines but for sure this would bring sweet memories back to lolos and lolas (grandpa and grandma).”

Someone else wrote: “As a Filipino working in the UK, this brought me to tears because I don't know when I'll be able to spend Christmas with my family again. On the other hand, it's heart-warming to get some representation in this side of the world. Thank you, Disney!”
