Disney reportedly mulling bid for Twitter

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Disney (DIS) is reportedly talking with financial advisers in an attempt to evaluate a potential bid for Twitter (TWTR), according to Bloomberg.

Bloomberg's Alex Sherman and Sarah Frier broke the story this afternoon. Frier appeared on Monday's "Bloomberg Markets" on BloombergTV to discuss the report.

"What we know here is that Twitter and Disney already have a long standing relationship. Jack Dorsey is on the board of Disney; this is a long-standing partnership that could make sense. Many analysts have brought it up in the past, many investors as well," she explained.

Twitter is shifting towards being more of a content provider, exemplified by its recent live streaming deal with the NFL, she noted. This transition could represent a different way to focus on the Twitter brand.

"Disney would certainly be able to help them on that end. Disney has become very proficient at live-streaming. Disney owns ESPN, which is the destination for sports and Twitter has been focusing on sports deals and its expansion of streaming," Frier said.

She explained why speculation, beginning last week, has engulfed the Twitter debate.

"According to our sources there was some interest from Salesforce (CRM) and that caused Twitter to think we have to work with bankers and see if this is something we want to do," she added.

Shares of Disney were lower in mid-afternoon trading on Monday.

Separately, TheStreet Ratings team rates the stock as a "buy" with a ratings score of B.
