Disney+ hints that The Simpsons will be added to its UK streaming catalogue

Disney has suggested that The Simpsons will be included in its Disney+ UK streaming catalogue after all, following reports that the series’ rights would remain with Sky.

On Twitter, the streaming service’s official UK account posted the message: “Grab yourself a Do’h-nut and stay tuned...”

The message referred to Homer Simpson’s famous catchphrase, and was accompanied by the image of a spinning doughnut, drawn in the recognisable Simpsons style.

Disney acquired the rights to the long-running animated series when they merged with Fox in 2019.

The entire 31-season catalogue is currently available to stream on Disney+ in the US, but The Simpsons has been broadcast in the UK on Sky One and Channel 4.

It was recently confirmed that The Simpsons, along with Disney-owned films like the Marvel franchise, would still be viewable in the UK on Sky for the forseeable future

Whether Disney expect people to “stay tuned” for a matter of years, or whether The Simpsons will be accessible on Disney+ at the same time as Sky, remains to be seen.

The Simpsons has been in the news recently for apparently predicting the coronavirus outbreak, and for the announcement that Hank Azaria will refuse to voice Apu again - even though the show's creators confessed to quietly writing out the character years ago.

Disney+ launches in the UK on 24 March 2020.
