Disney Executive Sean Bailey Exiting, David Greenbaum Named Replacement

Sean Bailey steps down after 15 years as Disney's president of production.

Disney executive Sean Bailey is stepping down after 15 years as the president of production for the motion picture group. David Greenbaum, currently the chief of Searchlight, will take over Bailey's position as the newly appointed president of Live Action and 20th Century Studios. This move, effective immediately, will see Greenbaum reporting to Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman.

The restructuring combines Disney's live-action division, responsible for remakes and spinoffs of classic films, with 20th Century Studios, formerly known as Fox. Bergman praised Greenbaum's creative sensibility and leadership skills, citing his successful track record at Searchlight Pictures and strong industry relationships.

Bailey, who has overseen Disney's live-action slate since 2010, will transition to a producer role for projects like 'Tron: Ares.' During his tenure, Bailey led successful adaptations of beloved properties such as 'Alice in Wonderland,' 'Maleficent,' and 'Jungle Book,' as well as billion-dollar hits like 'The Lion King,' 'Beauty and the Beast,' and 'Aladdin.'

Despite Bailey's successes, Disney faced challenges at the box office in 2023, including the underperformance of 'The Haunted Mansion.' While 'The Little Mermaid' remake grossed $569 million worldwide, it fell short of the success of previous live-action adaptations.

Bergman expressed gratitude for Bailey's contributions and announced his continued involvement as a producer for 'Tron: Ares.' Greenbaum, previously president of Searchlight Pictures, brings a wealth of experience from managing the indie division once owned by 20th Century Fox. He worked on acclaimed films like 'The Shape of Water,' 'Nomadland,' and 'The Favourite.'

As part of the restructuring, Steve Asbell will report to Greenbaum and remain president of 20th Century Studios. Asbell, known for his work on franchises like 'Avatar' and 'Planet of the Apes,' will oversee upcoming projects such as 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' and 'Alien: Romulus.'

Disney's future slate includes remakes of 'Snow White,' 'Moana,' and 'Lilo & Stitch,' along with new projects like 'Mufasa,' a spinoff of 'The Lion King.' Greenbaum expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue Disney and 20th Century's storytelling legacy, emphasizing the honor and responsibility he feels in his new role.
