Disney+ Day: What is it about and what films and TV shows have been added?

We hope you have kept your weekend wide open, because it’s extremely likely that you’ll want to stay welded to your sofa.

Why? Well, today is Disney+ Day, the streamer’s most important day of the year, when a dozen new films and shows are added to the site for viewers to enjoy. Top additions this year include the new live-action Pinocchio remake starring Tom Hanks, plus Thor: Love and Thunder will finally be available to watch on the small screen.

Here’s our round-up of everything else there is to know.

What’s Disney+ Day really all about?

Essentially, it’s a virtual event that Disney+ uses to promote its films and shows. This year it’s dropping just one day before D23 Expo, Disney’s major biennial fan convention which will run over the weekend in California. Disney+ Day launched last year the day was generally panned for being both light on new material and for being badly promoted, as its announcements were made via a Twitter thread.

In 2022 they’re not making the same mistake again: this morning they dropped a surprise BTS concert film and released a sneak peek of the forthcoming prequel Star Wars series Andor, plus there are 15 other additions to look forward to.

As if that wasn’t enough, fans are also treated to a behind-the-scenes documentary about how the Thor film was made, including interviews with cast members.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return

The Star Wars spin-off series Obi-Wan Kenobi starring Ewan McGregor was released back in May. Here, fans get another documentary, this time about how all it went down behind the scenes on planet Tatooine.

This documentary series follows the very true and very bonkers story of what happened when actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds announced that they were going to buy Welsh football club Wrexham A.F.C. The series is told by – spolier – the club owners, McElhenney and Reynolds.
