Disney becomes first studio ever to release five $1 billion-grossing hits in a single year

Disneyhas broken a box office record by releasing five $1 billion-grossing films in a single year, after Toy Story 4 crossed the billion dollar border this week.

In a further reflection of Disney’s all-encompassing dominance at the box office this year, Toy Story 4 has followed in the footsteps of Aladdin, Captain Marvel, The Lion King and Avengers: Endgame. The latter has grossed nearly $3 billion in total.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Far from Home is the only non-Disney film to achieve the feat this year so far, though even that is co-produced by Disney’s Marvel Studios.

The gravy train will likely not be stopping in the next few months, either, with Disney releases Frozen 2 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker each expected to gross above or at least close to a billion dollars worldwide. The launch of their official streaming service, Disney+, will also contribute enormous numbers to their 2019 bottom line.

Disney’s commercial success is also doubly impressive as they recently announced a rare $170 million loss in their third quarter of the financial year, largely because of the box office failure of X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
