Dishwasher fire leaves Naperville home uninhabitable, officials say

July 31--A fire in a dishwasher caused enough damage to leave a Naperville home uninhabitable Thursday night, fire officials said.

Dispatchers received a call at 9:08 p.m. about smoke and flames coming from the dishwasher in the kitchen of a home in the 200 block of Tamarack Avenue, according to a release from the Naperville Fire Department.

Responders arrived within four minutes and reported smoke showing on the outside of the home. The occupants had gotten out of the building.

Crews were able extinguish the fire with a dry-chemical extinguisher, according to the release.

Damage was isolated to the dishwasher and immediate area, but there was a moderate amount of smoke damage throughout the home.

A city inspector deemed the building was not habitable and residents were relocated for the evening, according to the release. The fire was determined to be accidental.

Two occupants of the home were evaluated at the scene and did not require hospitalization. No firefighters were reported injured.

A crew of 24 responders was at the scene. The Naperville Fire Department was assisted by the Naperville Police Department and Nicor. Fire units from the Plainfield and Bolingbrook provided station coverage for Naperville during this incident.
