Dishoom defies restaurant gloom to post sales jump

Indian cafés chain Dishoom has avoided the casual-dining crunch that has swept Britain, by posting a jump in sales.

Turnover in 2018 increased by 26.3% to £45 million, and pre-tax profits improved to £2.3 million from £874,000, recently filed accounts show.

The family-run business was founded in London in 2010 and it is expanding. It emerged last month Dishoom will undergo a major redesign at its Covent Garden restaurant, including an expansion into the neighbouring former Jamie’s Italian site.

Growth proposals are in contrast to a number of chains that have closed sites or sought rent cuts amid weaker consumer confidence and higher business rates and wage bills.

However, Dishoom, which has number of branches in the capital including in Kensington, outlined that it is not immune to wider risk. Its report said: “The political uncertainty around Brexit creates additional supply and inflation risks which the company are working to mitigate.”
