'Disgusting!' - Huge weight of support for Seaham lollipop lady who was abused by school-run parents

Angry readers have given their support to a County Durham lollipop lady who was verbally abused by parents.

It comes after County Durham Live reported that New Seaham Academy crossing patrol officer, Joyce Medhurst, had been subjected to extensive abuse and aggressive behaviour by parents who were parking illegally and dangerously.

Durham Constabulary officers increased patrols at the school and Durham County Council branded the actions "unacceptable".

Now readers have slammed the actions on social media, and one child even gave their beloved lollipop lady a bunch of flowers.

Writing on Facebook, fellow lollipop lady Lisa Mcbride said: "This is terrible, no-one or nobody should put up with this kind of abuse. It is not right.

"We are here to do a job and also we are out in all weathers make sure all these kids are safe on the road. I am a lollipop lady and I'm proud to be one."

Sandra Judd is "sick to death" of the treatment crossing patrollers get from some drivers.

She added: "Don't people realise all they're doing is what they're employed to do? Provide a safe place for children to cross the road.

"Part of that is asking anyone parked dangerously to place move.

"I had similar problems when I was working and so do most patrols.

"Your parking is not more important than the safety of the kids, parents and the crossing patrol."

Karen Whalen said: "It shows what sort of example kids are being shown today."

While Steph Watson branded the actions "shocking".

She said: "Disgusting! Lollipop ladies and men stand out in all weathers to keep your kids safe going to and from school to get abused. Shocking man."

Hayley Hodgson said parents should know better.

She added: "I meant if she/he is keeping the kids safe, then shut up and move on.

"I've seen it happen to our local lollipop lady. The drivers are notorious for it."

A man, who took to a community social media page, said: "This poor lady is doing an excellent job. Well done. Bless you. These mobs have got no respect at all."

Another wrote: "You're kidding me? Absolutely fuming about this. Joyce is a lovely lady and was our lollipop lady for years, absolute diamond that woman."

A woman added: "If one of their kids got knocked down they'd really have something to moan about. Poor woman is only doing her job by keeping the children safe. Shame on those complaining."
