'Disgusting' fake fundraiser set up for family of Montrose cop who died on duty

Horrified family members of a on duty have slammed a 'disgusting' fake website that's been set up to raise funeral funds.

collapsed while directing traffic at a road accident near Montrose on September 3.

The popular 51-year-old from nearby Friockheim was a keen skier and due to retire next year.

On Thursday his grieving daughter Sophie took to social media to warn loved ones that a fake fundraising page had been set up under the family's name.

On Facebook Sophie shared the link to the sickening scam page and wrote: "This is fake.

"Please report if you see it.

"When sharing please comment saying it is fake so people know and don't just share the link.

"It looks like it's open to donations.

"I can't believe it.

"We've got enough going on."

The page falls under gogetfunding.com and is titled, 'Roy Buggins Funeral Fund'.

Roy's distraught wife Faye, 45, is cruelly listed as the 'campaign owner', while Friockheim is tagged as the location.

So far no donations appear to have been made to the page as locals continue to dissuade others to steer clear.

On Facebook Kaitlyn Brown posted: "Do not donate to this and please report it.

"Some people are disgusting trying to benefit from such a horrible situation."

John Russell wrote: "This is fake please ignore.

"Can’t believe the scumbags."

Colin Watt added: "If you come across this please report it as this is a fake page set up by some sick scamming b*****d.

"Roy was a serving police officer who died while on duty.

"Why would his wife need to use this sort of s**t to pay for a funeral?

"Sick, horrible b******s.

The page is tagged as being created in Roy Buggins' home town of Friockheim (Go Get Funding)

Tributes have been pouring in for the hardworking officer since his death, including from Tayside’s most senior police officer.

Chief Superintendent Andrew Todd, Tayside Divisional Commander, said: “I can confirm a Police Scotland officer has died while on duty in the Montrose area.

“The sympathies of everyone at Police Scotland are with the officer’s family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.

“There are no apparent suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

A spokesman for PC Buggins' colleagues in Tayside said: "We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of one of our officers while on duty yesterday.

"PC Roy Buggins had 29 years’ service as an officer, and was a highly valued and well-respected member of the Montrose and Brechin Community Policing Team."
