Disgust at racist 'swastika' graffiti in Merseyside town

A swastika was discovered daubed onto a wall in Maghull for the second time in a month.

The Nazi symbol appeared on the A59 subway, a busy route into the town centre, last week.

That incident followed reports of another swastika spray painted onto the ground of Ridgeway Park, a children's playground in Lydiate on Holocaust Memorial Day (January 27).

Maghull Town councillor Thomas Hughes, who represents East Ward, posted on Facebook: "With growing reports of Racist graffiti across the parks in Maghull, vandals have also now started to target the subway too.

"This passageway is used by hundreds every day, so Town Cllr Ken Hughes was on hand to remove this offensive graffiti immediately.

"Be in doubt there is no place for these vile symbols are our town."

Cllr Thomas Hughes told The ECHO: “ There is no place in Maghull for these racist symbols and a very small minority who participate in this graffiti do not represent our town.

"We hope that reporting these issues to Sefton council and quickly removing the offensive graffiti wherever we see it, is the best course of action going forward.”

A Sefton Council spokesperson said:“Of course, Sefton Council deplores this kind of action and does deal with this kind of graffiti as soon as possible when it’s reported to us.

“Offensive graffiti of this kind can be classified as a hate crime, and we do urge people who are victims of hate crime to call the Police using 101 or the Police Facebook and Twitter accounts.

“Alternatively, people can report it to Stop Hate UK, who can be contact by calling 0800 138 1625 or at talk@stophateuk.org. Details of hate crime reporting centres across Sefton can be found at www.sefton.gov.uk/hate-crime-reporting.

“Sefton Council also holds Hate Crime Awareness training courses for its staff, the next of which takes place on Thursday of this week.”
