Disgust as mountains of rubbish left in Manchester parks and squares as thousands flock outside

Broken bottles, gas cannisters and dozens of plastic bags were left behind at popular socialising spots in Manchester after people gathered in the sun yesterday.

Pictures taken this morning show Platt Fields Park in Fallowfield and Cutting Room Square in Ancoats in a sorry state with litter strewn across the areas.

Hundreds of empty glass bottles, cans and empty alcohol boxes were left on the hill at the south Manchester park.

Gas cannisters were dotted around on the grass and bins were overflowing.

Dozens of plastic carrier bags and piles of burnt out rubbish were also left behind at the park.

There were similar scenes in Cutting Room Square with empty cans and bottles of alcohol left behind at the popular socialising spot.

Biffa workers were pictured cleaning up the mess this morning.

It comes after lockdown rules eased in England on Monday, allowing people to meet up outdoors or in gardens in groups of six.

Under the new restrictions, social distancing measures should remain in place.

But a furious resident said that 'hundreds' of people gathered at Platt Fields last night (Tuesday) and sat together in one large group as a mini heatwave hit the region.

"Students and young locals treat it like a Parklife event", she told the M.E.N .

"As soon as the sun comes out, because there are no bars, restaurants or pubs open due to the lockdown, they all flock to the park.

"When the alcohol is flowing and there are no facilities open they are using the back of people's houses to urinate and defecate.

"This is outrageous as it is against the law to do this in a public place.

"They have no shame as when approached they just laugh or give verbal abuse and if they see you looking out at them they look up and wave.

"They just don't care at all."

Earlier this month, police issued a warning over large gatherings after 'hundreds' of people were pictured at the park in sunny weather.

They reportedly drank alcohol and socialised together.

The incident happened before lockdown restrictions were eased and when outdoor mixing was only permitted with your own household, or with one other person for the purposes of exercise.

At the time Greater Manchester Police said fines were still being handed out to those who break the rules.

The M.E.N has contacted GMP this morning to find out whether any fines were handed out last night.
