Disgust as 'mouldy' pizza and bread dumped in Attenborough Nature Reserve water

A woman has spoken of her disgust after she witnessed people dumping "mouldy" pizza and naan breads into water at a popular nature reserve.

Kaylie Kendall was sat on the benches near the café at Attenborough Nature Reserve at the main entrance when she saw people walk into the nature reserve carrying two large boxes.

They began to throw full pizzas and naan bread into the water to feed the animals, eventually tipping the content of the last box into the water and leaving.

Footage taken by Kaylie on May 13 at around 2.30pm shows birds gathering around the dumped fast food.

The 20-year-old of Attenborough told Nottinghamshire Live: "I was just very shocked to see them carrying down the food and then just throwing full pieces into the water. It’s just a disgrace.

"Upon closer inspection, I realised that all this food was mouldy."

Erin McDaid, head of communications at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, told Nottinghamshire Live: "Having seen the footage we're very concerned that anyone should consider it OK to dump a large quantity of waste food at a nature reserve.

"From what we understand, the types of food are also unsuitable for wild birds and mouldy foodstuffs should never be fed to wildlife.

"Our staff are very stretched at the moment with many team members furloughed to protect jobs - so the last thing they need is incidents like this - however well-intentioned."

The act also attracted anger when shared on social media with people calling it "dirty", "foul" and the "weirdest thing they had seen".

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed the incident had been reported to them.

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting incident number 552 of May 13, 2020.

In a statement issued by the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust responding to the latest government announcement on coronavirus lockdown measures, it urged people to "think twice" before driving to hotspots where social distancing may be difficult.

The statement read: “Following the announcement that people can now take unlimited exercise, we would ask everyone to think twice before immediately jumping in their cars to visit their favourite pre-lockdown haunts.

"We welcome that people can now enjoy increased contact with nature, but to ensure people can observe safe social distancing we would encourage people to continue enjoying wildlife on their doorsteps and to avoid driving to popular destinations such as Attenborough, Skylarks and Idle Valley immediately."
